This work was originally created in 2016 during an exchange in Bourges, France. In revisiting and remaking the piece, I took Bali—where I have lived for the past ten years—as the site of exploration.

Separated by the river from the bustling and densely populated areas of Tamsui and Beitou, Bali has often given me the illusion of being an “island.” Movement to and from the area requires either crossing a bridge or taking a ferry, and the road running along the river is the only main route. This sense of isolation is not an objective geographical condition, but a psychological landscape constructed through movement and walking. From the perspective of le flâneur, I observe, traverse, and redraw the city I inhabit, shaping it into a subjective map. Gradually, the rational world begins to blur with personal, sensory experience: as one navigates the geometric forms on the surface of the map, the movement of the fingers evokes the sensation of standing on that very street—its surrounding buildings, the rhythm of footsteps, and the act of walking itself.

In planning this work, the height of children was taken as a reference scale, and the sound environment within the installation was reimagined. While the 2016 version featured the sound of heels walking across stone pavement, this version borrows the sound of my roommate’s snoring during deep sleep, allowing visitors to hear the island quietly rumbling as they move through the space.
