Freedom, equality, hope, and justice—rights that may seem almost commonplace to us today—serve as the starting point of this workshop. Taking these slogan-like keywords as a point of departure, the strokes of each character are dismantled, allowing them to become abstract blocks of color. Using primary colors such as red, yellow, blue, and green, these symbolic color blocks are randomly arranged on the page; strokes originating from the same character are assigned the same color.
Color itself is neutral—meaning is something people attribute to it. To oppose authoritarianism is to oppose the restriction of thought. Under conditions of closure and control, even the pursuit of universal values may cross the limits set by those in power.
The written strokes are deconstructed, dispersed, and remade into small books. Originally conceived as a vehicle for transmitting messages, the content becomes abstracted and difficult to read—or rather, it requires a mode of reading akin to deciphering a code. Through hands-on engagement, participants are invited to reconsider the relationships between language, symbol, and message.
